Dr. Greg's Historical & Modern Photography
Columns
The human body is written upon by many things. Experiences, events (welcome and unwelcome). How the body response is written in the face and the demeanor of an individual. With the photographic lens there are numerous ways of showing that writing. Photography is "writing with light": and so that is the primary form which we recognize when looking at a photo. Here is a body that has endured many experiences—happy, sad and any number of ones in between. Those experiences are written here in the ways the shadows of the trees and the vegetation fall on her and the columns of the monument. The monument and the body in different ways accept the light and the shadows and interpret it. Both communicate to us. How do you see? Is this sad, happy, serene?
